The Correlation between Cognitive Function and Basic Activites of Daily Living of the Elderly People with Dementia in the Residential Care Faciites

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between cognitive function and basic activities of daily living of the dementia elderly who reside at residential care facilities. The subjects were 38 dementia older who were receiving care at residential facilities based in Daegu. And data were collected from January 2012 to March 2012. Korean Mini-Mental State Examination(K-MMSE) was used to evaluation cognitive function and Functional independence measure(FIM) was used to evaluation BADL. In this study, the mean of the cognitive function score and BADL score were 9.13 and 52.29 respectively. And the elderly people with dementia had low score of cognitive function and BADL. There were statistically significant correlation between cognitive function and BADL(p<.05). And There were statistically significant correlation among cognitive function, self-care, sphincter control, communication, social cognition(p<.05), But no significant correlation among cognitive function, transfer, locomotion(p>.05). There were statistically significant correlation between memory recall and all sub-items of BADL(p<.05). But no significant correlation among attention & calculation, visuospatial construction and all sub-items of BADL(p>.05).This study results demonstrate that a close relationship between cognitive function and BADL, especially memory recall and BADL.
